Feeding Your Infant

This file is for the newborn-1+ years old. Breastmilk is the most natural option for all babies, our bodies produce the exact nutrition our child needs. However, some need a reference source for alternative options for their infants so this is our list of recommendations. This will first go over concerns of possible low milk supply, the option of relactaion if your child has not been nursing, and then covers homemade formula and organic options. Exclusively breastfeeding or offering an alternative (breastmilk/homemade formula/organic formula) is recommended until 6 months of age, with the main nutrition focus remaining on these until 1 year of age.

I Don't Make Enough Milk
First, if you think you do not produce enough milk for your child, please reference these sources. If you have been told this by a pediatrician, please note they receive ZERO breastfeeding education! Also consider tongue or lip ties may be to blame if baby is not gaining much.
  • Seek out an IBCLC or Certified Lactation Consultant. They ARE educated in how the body works to produce breastmilk and will better be able to help you towards your breastfeeding goals.
  • Make sure you are using the WHO growth charts for your child since they are based off the breastfeeding child. There are charts for boys and girls, so use the correct chart for your child. You will want to track that your child is growing on their individual growth curve.

Not currently nursing? Relactation is an Option!
Getting milk production back after a period of not nursing is very possible for most women. It can take around a month to be producing enough for your child. If this is something you are interested in check out the links below. If baby will latch, start supplementing at the breast using a Supplemental Nursing System. This will help your body start to produce milk again. If baby will not latch, use a pump to build your milk production and then you can work to get baby back to breast.

Donated Breastmilk!
Consider finding a breastmilk donor for your baby if the above options will not work for you. Local breastfeeding groups or natural parenting groups are your best option for full time donors. These are the mothers who will be providing milk for your baby on a regular/weekly basis. It would be ideal to find a mother whose baby is the same age or a little older than your baby so the nutritional needs are similar to your child. You can also find one time milk donations through sites such as Eats on Feets or Human Milk 4 Human Babies. Both of these have individual pages here on Facebook for all of the U.S. States, and most of the Canadian Provinces. When looking for a donor, only make 'transactions' that feel right to you. They should NOT charge you for the milk! You should consider offering replacement breastmilk storage bags for the ones they used for the milk they give you. Ask any and all questions you need to so you are comfortable receiving milk from someone you don't know. In general, someone taking their time to pump milk to donate will not have ill intentions. Homemade Formula
This would be the next option under donated breastmilk. If breastmilk donors are hard to find, this would be a great alternative. Raw Goats Milk is the closest to human's milk in terms of nutrition for infants. It is also easier on the stomach and easier for babies to digest. Babies with dairy allergies or sensitivities are often able to digest Goats milk with no issues. There are many recipes online. We recommend the Weston A. Organic Formula
Its probably best to avoid Similac and Gerber formula's, organic or otherwise, but if you are unable to find other options, those will do in a pinch. Options to research: Natures Only, Holle, HIPP Organic Formula, Baby's Only Organic Formula, Earths Best. Some offer organic versions for sensitive babies. Before choosing an organic formula, read the links below. Not all organic formula's are created equal, you will want to get what you are paying for! The UK formula's are held to a higher standard (Holle and HIPP) than the U.S. formula's so look into those first, if you can. Those often have to be bought online and you will want to leave enough time for it to be shipped from the country you purchase from.

CAUTION with Soy Formula
Those who have dairy sensitivities, please review the Homemade Formula section since Goats milk is often not an issue for babies who are dairy sensitive. Also definitely consider donor milk, you can post looking for a dairy free milk donor. Soy is often a GMO crop so this is another thing to be aware of if considering Soy Formula. Safe Sunscreens

With summer coming I thought it would be helpful to have a list of safe sunscreens to use. You can look up any sunscreen on EWG. org or the Think Dirty app to see how it rates. I also wanted to cover some other topics that relate to sun exposure and using sunscreen.

HOMEMADE
I would strongly encourage you to research well before making a homemade sunscreen. There are many parts that go into making an effective sunscreen, and even following recipes, it will be impossible to know accurate SPF for what you have created without getting each batch tested. This is not an area you want to experiment in. I would encourage you to consider one of the brands listed below or finding a WAHM whose product has been tested to purchase from (WAHM are supposed to have homemade sunscreens tested, by law, before selling). If you do wish to learn more about homemade sunscreens, here are some things to keep in mind:

Most of the recipes you will find contain one or all of these errors. Here's the list to watch for when finding a recipe:

1. Essential oils are *not necessary* in homemade sunscreen recipes. Some oils can also make you more sensitive to the sun, or phototoxic, these may include citrus oils. Essential oils should be respected for the powerful medicine they are and not used for something like this where they are not needed, this includes using them for scent. Most recipes will also have unsafe dilutions for children so it's best to avoid adding essential oils at all.


2. Carrot seed oil and Raspberry seed oil are not effective for SPF. This is a big myth that they carry high amounts of SPF. Neither are useful or helpful to have in a homemade recipe.

3. You will want to make sure your homemade recipe includes zinc oxide as this is the only ingredient that will have SPF properties. Zinc oxide is said to be difficult to mix properly in a homemade recipe without the right equipment.

Look for ones with active ingredients of zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, other types can be harmful.

Spray on sunscreen:
When considering using a spray-on type, also note you will be inhaling this and that aerosol cans are not environmentally friendly.

Vaccines: Dr. Wakefield

"Vaccines - Dr. Wakefield"

"Dr. Wakefield is a gastroenterologist. The so-called "study" was actually a paper, an observation, not a study. He observed 12 children at the request of several parents. These children, according to the parents, regressed immediately following the MMR vaccine. Dr. Wakefield, along with several co-authors, concluded that the MMR appeared to cause intestinal issues and may contribute to other autism like symptoms, however, "more research should be done." The paper was not retracted because of issues with the data, but rather because the funding was from a parent's group. In essences, it has never been "debunked." He was quickly attacked by associates of media mogul Rupert Murdoch who's son James happened to sit on the board of Merck. Wakefield never went to jail. He still practices medicine here in the US. His study has since been duplicated more than 2 dozen times and dozens of other studies have confirmed that there is a link. Professor John Walker-Smith, the co-author on Wakefield’s study won his appeal against the UK’s General Medical Council regulatory board. This board originally ruled against him and Dr. Andrew Wakefield for their roles in the 1998 Lancet MMR paper. The board admitted their original conclusions were based on “inadequate and superficial reasoning and in a number of instances, a wrong conclusion.” Wakefield is currently in the process of appealing the ruling against him as well. Dr. Wakefield was the victim of a massive smear campaign. All for making a discovery that would have changed the world's perception on vaccines. If word got out that the MMR contributed to gastrointestinal issues seen in autism, the MMR program would fail overnight.

What many people don't realize is that Dr. Wakefield has had the continued support of his "fraudulent" test families since 1998. Wakefield's partner who published the paper with him has since been exonerated and Wakefield is in the process of being exonerated.

It's important to also mention the CDC Whistleblower and the intentional destruction of data data on their MMR vaccine studies. And also the famous "Danish study" in which no autism/vaccine link was found was done by Poul Thorsen and his co-authors. Poul Thorsen is a wanted fugitive for 13 counts of wire fraud and 9 counts of money laundering. A federal grand jury alleges that Thorsen stole over $1 million from autism research funding between February 2004 and June 2008. The study he published found no correlation between autism and vaccines. So who is the real fraud? Merck killed 40,000 people with their Vioxx lies. Any study put out by a pharmaceutical company cannot be trusted as it was designed, executed, and published by scientists who will make a profit off of that drug/vaccine. This is a HUGE conflict of interest. Merck is a BILLION dollar corporation. There is MUCH money to be lost if their vaccine programs fail.

It's also important to mention that Dr. Wakefield was NOT anti-vaccine and, in fact, his own children were fully vaccinated. He simply found a correlation with gastronintestinal issues, regressive autism, and the measles virus in the gut after MMR vaccination and he published a study on that with the recommendation that this issue be looked at more closely. And so began the massive smear campaign that would discredit him and ultimately land him in the USA. The vaccine industry was extremely successful in demonizing him in the eyes of the world at that time.

And since that time, many MANY children have suffered vaccine injury that ultimately led to their autism diagnosis. In fact, autism is a listed side effect in some of the vaccine inserts. The government's own vaccine court has ruled in a few cases that certain vaccines were responsible for the child's regression into autism. And thousands of families around the world (and especially in the US) continue to claim that their child regressed within days of certain vaccines (usually the MMR or the Dtap). Why should we not believe them? Why is their assessment of their child any less valid than your assessment of your child? They have nothing to gain by making these claims and they are risking their reputation as a sane person, in fact!

Most of these families will never make it to vaccine court. Their concerns over their child's new symptoms are quickly dismissed as "coincidence" by their doctor. The symptoms are not documented fast enough. Many parents are told it's normal to have a high fever, clinched fists, screaming, and even seizures after vaccines. And therefore there is no evidence to hold up in court. Hannah Poling's parents won their fight because her father was a practicing neurologist and her mother an attorney and registered nurse. They were extremely educated on the science and the law.

Essential Oil Companies

Here we have compiled a list of companies recommended by aromatherapists and herbalists.

A few things to keep in mind when assessing an Essential Oil company:
  1. The U.S.A. does not have a governing body that certifies Essential Oils.
  2. There are no "grades" of Essential Oils. Example: There is no grade quality A, B, C, etc. Terms such as "Therapeutic Grade", "Certified Therapeutic Grade", "Pharmaceutical Grade", etc. are all Trademarked Phrases or Marketing Phrases. This means a company has set these standards themselves, this does not prove one oil company better than another. Terms like these can be used to differentiate Aromatherapy Essential Oils from the Essential Oils used in fragrance, flavoring or foods. You will want Aromatherapy quality oils which are unadulterated, high quality Essential Oils. 
  3. Ingestion -our group does not recommend ingesting oils in any form, as this is something to be taken with great caution while under the guidance of a Certified Aromatherapist, when and if the need arises: some companies are obligated to NOT recommend their Essential Oils for ingestion in order to protect themselves legally. Essential Oils are extremely potent, and should not be used internally without the supervision of a Certified Aromatherapist. If a company isn't claiming that their essential oils are "safe for ingestion", that does NOT necessarily reflect upon the quality of their oils.
  4. Organic Labelling: Becoming Certified Organic is a lengthy and very expensive process. Many companies are able to accomplish this, despite being smaller in nature. Keep in mind that the quality of a companies oils is not based upon whether or not all of their oils are labeled "Certified Organic". We encourage you to research any company you consider purchasing from.
  5. Quality & Certifications: the websites below should have information available -some upon request- about the process, testing and quality of their essential oils.

A Note About MLM Companies


Many of the recommendations that come from MLMs (Multi-Level Marketing) are unsafe due to the information being market driven and not based on research. Examples being: using oils undiluted,  taking oils internally without the guidance of a Certified Aromatherapist, using oils and oil blends on children that are not considered safe for children.

Claims of MLM brand oils being the "best", "purest", or "highest quality" are also marketing tactics. As stated in point #1 above, there is no governing body to certify oils in this way, so these statements are purely those from the company itself.

For these reasons, we do not recommend books, classes, or recipes from MLM companies.

Breastfeeding: Plugged Ducts & Mastitis

Plugged ducts are painful, but if caught early and worked out they can go away within 1-4 days. Mastitis comes from plugged ducts that were NOT worked out. It is possible for Mastitis to greatly decrease, or finish your milk supply if left untreated. Listed below are helpful treatments that have worked for many women, but use your own judgement about when it may be time to go to the Doctor.

External Treatment
  • Always offer the breast with the plugged ducts first and then finish with the second breast if needed. (If baby doesn't nurse on the other breast you can pump to keep its supply from dropping too.)
  • Nurse, nurse, nurse! If you are an Exclusive Pumper, then pump, pump, pump! Keep the breast as empty as possible.
  • Hot shower with breast massage. Try to work out the lumps or at least massage the area carefully.
  • Submerge the breast into a big bowl or sink full of water by leaning over it, and massage for several minutes. The heat and submersion will help break up any clogging near the the nipple. Repeat as necessary.
  • Use heat packs (rice sock warmed and applied to the area) to help loosen things up.
  • Point baby's chin at the clogged area while nursing, since their strength of suction will be in that general direction. You may have to get creative with nursing positions.

  • Massage with constant, hard pressure while nursing or pumping.
  • Stay Hydrated! This is important. Drink lots and lots of water.
  • Essential Oils: Chamomile, Clove, Eucalyptus, Lavender, and others are good choices for supporting your immune system. Not all EOs are safe for Breastfeeding though, so do your research. Below are a few handy Charts to help guide you. ***Please educate yourself on the proper use and application of Essential Oils. They are potent and can be dangerous when used incorrectly. Always dilute with a Carrier Oil.
Internal Treatment
  • Garlic: an excellent natural antibiotic, without all the side effects of conventional antibiotics. Chop up a garlic clove into pill-sized pieces and swallow with juice or something if the taste is too strong for you. Aim for taking 6-8 cloves per day.

Preventing Recurrent Plugged Ducts & Mastitis
Some women find that they are especially prone to Plugged Ducts and Mastitis, experiencing it over and over again. There are some preventive measures you can take though to help minimize this.
  • Go Bra-less or only wear a Nursing Camisole. The pressure on your Milk Ducts from conventional Bras (especially underwire bras) can often contribute to frequent Plugged Ducts & Mastitis. Going bra-less can help prevent this.
  • Baltic Amber: Wearing Amber can help reduce the inflammation that leads to Plugged Ducts & Mastitis. The more localized the better, so ideally get an Amber necklace. Colloidal Silver Dosing

First, multiply your body weight by 12. And then divide that total by the ppm of the colloidal silver solution you're using.

This will tell you how many DROPS (i.e., from an eye dropper) of colloidal silver you can take each day, safely, for a lifetime, without fear of ending up with argyria (i.e., skin-staining).

For example, if you're 125 pounds, and you're using a 10 ppm colloidal silver solution, you'd multiply 12 times 125 = 1,500. Then divide 1,500 by 10 (ppm), which is 150.

So at a body weight of 125 pounds, you can safely take 150 drops of colloidal silver per day, for your entire life, according to the Silver Safety Council. That's a little bit over a teaspoonful a day.

Kitchen
  • Cast iron, glass or stainless steel in place of teflon coated pans
  • Cermanic or glass (like Pyrex or Mason jars) for food storage
  • Put down natural floring over vinyl
  • Use wood cutting boards
  • Cover food in the microwave with a paper towel instead of plastic microwave saver
  • Glass drinking glasses or dishes (bamboo might be another option for plates and bowls)
  • Wood spoons for stirring and cooking
  • Stainless steel utensils for cooking on the stove

Bathroom
  • Pick a cotton shower curtain over vinyl.
  • Have kids play with cotton wash cloths, finger puppets, wooden toy boats or light weight aluminim cups.
  • Store what you can in mason jars over plastic alternatives, if you make homemade this will especially be easier.

Plastic Water Bottles
Water that has been stored in plastic water bottles might actually be full of toxins. If the bottles were or are stored in a place where they can get warm, the toxins release themselves from the plastic and into the water, and then into your system when you drink it. Avoid water stored in plastic containers when possible.
