Avoiding or Limiting Plastics

Avoiding or Limiting Plastics

A quick, get started, guide! If you have tips our ideas, do share! :)

Kitchen
  • Cast iron, glass or stainless steel in place of teflon coated pans
  • Cermanic or glass (like Pyrex or Mason jars) for food storage
  • Put down natural floring over vinyl
  • Use wood cutting boards
  • Cover food in the microwave with a paper towel instead of plastic microwave saver
  • Glass drinking glasses or dishes (bamboo might be another option for plates and bowls)
  • Wood spoons for stirring and cooking
  • Stainless steel utensils for cooking on the stove

Bathroom
  • Pick a cotton shower curtain over vinyl.
  • Have kids play with cotton wash cloths, finger puppets, wooden toy boats or light weight aluminim cups.
  • Store what you can in mason jars over plastic alternatives, if you make homemade this will especially be easier.

Plastic Water Bottles
Water that has been stored in plastic water bottles might actually be full of toxins. If the bottles were or are stored in a place where they can get warm, the toxins release themselves from the plastic and into the water, and then into your system when you drink it. Avoid water stored in plastic containers when possible.

Plastics Affect on Women
Women especially should avoid plastics because the plastics act as estrogen in a woman's body and cause tons of hormonal imbalances.

  • Pregnant women should avoid receipets: http://o.canada.com/news/national/researchers-advise-pregnant-women-to-limit-exposure-to-receipts-and-plastic?utm_content=bufferff614&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook.com&utm_campaign=buffer

Toys for Kids
Pick cloth, wood, or natural materials for kids toys.

Un-Plastic Baby Bottles
Pick a nipple that is made from silicone over laytex. Use glass bottles over plastic.

Un-Plastic Cookware & Bakeware
Teflon has nasty chemicals in it so opt for stainless steel or cast iron instead for stove top cooking. For the oven, glass or cast iron work well for most things too.
