Breastfeeding: Plugged Ducts & Mastitis

Breastfeeding: Plugged Ducts & Mastitis

Plugged ducts are painful, but if caught early and worked out they can go away within 1-4 days. Mastitis comes from plugged ducts that were NOT worked out. It is possible for Mastitis to greatly decrease, or finish your milk supply if left untreated. Listed below are helpful treatments that have worked for many women, but use your own judgement about when it may be time to go to the Doctor.

External Treatment
  • Always offer the breast with the plugged ducts first and then finish with the second breast if needed. (If baby doesn't nurse on the other breast you can pump to keep its supply from dropping too.)
  • Nurse, nurse, nurse! If you are an Exclusive Pumper, then pump, pump, pump! Keep the breast as empty as possible.
  • Hot shower with breast massage. Try to work out the lumps or at least massage the area carefully.
  • Submerge the breast into a big bowl or sink full of water by leaning over it, and massage for several minutes. The heat and submersion will help break up any clogging near the the nipple. Repeat as necessary.
  • Use heat packs (rice sock warmed and applied to the area) to help loosen things up.
  • Point baby's chin at the clogged area while nursing, since their strength of suction will be in that general direction. You may have to get creative with nursing positions.
  • Utilize the dangle feeding position: http://kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mother/dangle-feeding/
  • If baby is able, try the side-lying position through the night and nurse only, or mostly on the affected side. - http://www.mother-2-mother.com/tut-layingdown.htm
  • Massage with constant, hard pressure while nursing or pumping.
  • Stay Hydrated! This is important. Drink lots and lots of water.
  • Essential Oils: Chamomile, Clove, Eucalyptus, Lavender, and others are good choices for supporting your immune system. Not all EOs are safe for Breastfeeding though, so do your research. Below are a few handy Charts to help guide you. ***Please educate yourself on the proper use and application of Essential Oils. They are potent and can be dangerous when used incorrectly. Always dilute with a Carrier Oil.
Internal Treatment
  • Garlic: an excellent natural antibiotic, without all the side effects of conventional antibiotics. Chop up a garlic clove into pill-sized pieces and swallow with juice or something if the taste is too strong for you. Aim for taking 6-8 cloves per day.
  • Turmeric: a very powerful anti-inflammatory. One of the easiest ways to take turmeric is to make Golden Milk. Recipe: http://herbalacademyofne.com/2013/12/turmeric-the-golden-goddess/
  • Phytolacca: a Homeopathic great for inflammation.
  • Lecithin: a supplement that reduces the viscosity of Breastmilk and is an emulsifier, helping the Breastmilk to flow freely: http://kellymom.com/nutrition/vitamins/lecithin/
  • Use a raw potato: http://kellymom.com/bf/can-i-breastfeed/herbs/natural-treatments/#potato
  • Immune Support: Elderberry Syrup, Echinacea, Vitamin C, etc.
Plugged Ducts
Plugged Ducts are can be quite painful, or just a mild annoyance. Either way, it's important to treat it right away, as it can quickly turn into Mastitis. Following the protocol above can help prevent that from happening.

Mastitis
A mild Breast Infection can be treated from home using the protocol above. To help you determine if you need to go to the Doctor or not, read over these resources:

Preventing Recurrent Plugged Ducts & Mastitis
Some women find that they are especially prone to Plugged Ducts and Mastitis, experiencing it over and over again. There are some preventive measures you can take though to help minimize this.
  • Go Bra-less or only wear a Nursing Camisole. The pressure on your Milk Ducts from conventional Bras (especially underwire bras) can often contribute to frequent Plugged Ducts & Mastitis. Going bra-less can help prevent this.
  • Baltic Amber: Wearing Amber can help reduce the inflammation that leads to Plugged Ducts & Mastitis. The more localized the better, so ideally get an Amber necklace. Traditionally, the lighter the color and the more "raw" (not polished) the Amber is, the greater the therapeutic properties are. There is a lot of fake Amber on the market though, so the Admins recommend doing your research into the company you purchase from. Many of us Admins have had great experiences with purchasing fromwww.HazelAid.com though.
  • Lecithin: this supplement (available at most drug stores) can help as a preventative, since it reduces the viscosity of Breastmilk and is an emulsifier, helping the Breastmilk to flow freely.  http://kellymom.com/nutrition/vitamins/lecithin/

Colloidal Silver Dosing

First, multiply your body weight by 12. And then divide that total by the ppm of the colloidal silver solution you're using.

This will tell you how many DROPS (i.e., from an eye dropper) of colloidal silver you can take each day, safely, for a lifetime, without fear of ending up with argyria (i.e., skin-staining).

For example, if you're 125 pounds, and you're using a 10 ppm colloidal silver solution, you'd multiply 12 times 125 = 1,500. Then divide 1,500 by 10 (ppm), which is 150.

So at a body weight of 125 pounds, you can safely take 150 drops of colloidal silver per day, for your entire life, according to the Silver Safety Council. That's a little bit over a teaspoonful a day.

Avoiding or Limiting Plastics

Avoiding or Limiting Plastics

A quick, get started, guide! If you have tips our ideas, do share! :)

Kitchen
  • Cast iron, glass or stainless steel in place of teflon coated pans
  • Cermanic or glass (like Pyrex or Mason jars) for food storage
  • Put down natural floring over vinyl
  • Use wood cutting boards
  • Cover food in the microwave with a paper towel instead of plastic microwave saver
  • Glass drinking glasses or dishes (bamboo might be another option for plates and bowls)
  • Wood spoons for stirring and cooking
  • Stainless steel utensils for cooking on the stove

Bathroom
  • Pick a cotton shower curtain over vinyl.
  • Have kids play with cotton wash cloths, finger puppets, wooden toy boats or light weight aluminim cups.
  • Store what you can in mason jars over plastic alternatives, if you make homemade this will especially be easier.

Plastic Water Bottles
Water that has been stored in plastic water bottles might actually be full of toxins. If the bottles were or are stored in a place where they can get warm, the toxins release themselves from the plastic and into the water, and then into your system when you drink it. Avoid water stored in plastic containers when possible.

Plastics Affect on Women
Women especially should avoid plastics because the plastics act as estrogen in a woman's body and cause tons of hormonal imbalances.

  • Pregnant women should avoid receipets: http://o.canada.com/news/national/researchers-advise-pregnant-women-to-limit-exposure-to-receipts-and-plastic?utm_content=bufferff614&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook.com&utm_campaign=buffer

Kitchen Things
  • DIY Reusable Food Wraps: http://www.mommypotamus.com/diy-reusable-food-wrap/

Toys for Kids
Pick cloth, wood, or natural materials for kids toys.

Un-Plastic Baby Bottles
Pick a nipple that is made from silicone over laytex. Use glass bottles over plastic.

Un-Plastic Cookware & Bakeware
Teflon has nasty chemicals in it so opt for stainless steel or cast iron instead for stove top cooking. For the oven, glass or cast iron work well for most things too.

Vaccine Research

Vaccine Research

I've been meaning to start this file for awhile now, but I keep thinking "I'll do it when I finish researching this vaccine or that vaccine..." I've discovered that you'll never truly be doing researching vaccines so I decided to just get this file up and running for anyone who needs the research *now*. I'll be updating as I find new information and this isn't nearly all I have so if you need links on something but dont see it here comment or pm me (Helen Stafford) and I'll see if I have stuff that hasn't been added yet.

I will be adding more to this as I have time. I have hundreds of links that are *not* sorted at all so it is going to take me awhile to build this file, but it has begun!

Getting Started on Your Own Research
(added by request) There is no good place to start with vaccine research. There is just too much to jump into all of it at once. So, when people ask, this is usually what I tell them: Start with the disease that scares you the most, the disease that you are considering vaccinating against. Look at the actual disease. What happens when you catch the disease? What are the symptoms, complications, side effects, negatives or positives to catching the disease, what are the current treatments available for it, how long does it last, what are the death rates of the disease for the last 5, 10, 15, 20 years? Once you have an idea of what you are dealing with, if you or your child caught the disease, look at the vaccine. I always encourage looking at the vaccine insert first. There is so much information there including complcations, risks, side effects, dangers... Look at how many coplications/reactions and deaths have happend in the last year (more if you're up to it) for that specific vaccine. Look at how many children have been negavitely affected by the vaccine, find out how effective the vaccine is to preventing the disease its supposed to protect against. How often do you have to recieve a booster shot for the vaccine? How many deaths are caused by the vaccine? Once you have looked at the disease vs. the vaccine you'll have a pretty good idea of which one has a higher risk for your family and then you can make an informed decision on whether or not to get that vaccination for you or your child. Repeat as needed for any other disease/vaccine combo.

If you are wanting to start doing your own vaccine research, I *highly* recommend you join this group. Check out their files section for hundreds, if not thousands of links on all the vaccines. Also doing a search for a disease/vaccine while using a computer will filter all the threads and pull up the ones that discuss that vaccine/disease and you might find other helpful links or information there as well.

Elimination Communication

Elimination Communication (EC)

What is EC?
Elimination Communication, or EC, is based on the idea that babies are born with the instinct not to soil themselves. Have you ever noticed that a newborn baby seems to urinate as soon as his or her diaper is removed? There is a reason for that! By communicating with your baby about his or her need to eliminate, you can help your baby retain his or her natural body awareness, preventing the process of training them to go in a diaper, then retraining them, often several years later, to go in the toilet instead.

The following resources should be very helpful if you are interested in learning more. Some members here have practiced EC or a modified version of it with their children, so feel free to post on the main wall for discussion on this.

Alternative Essential Oil Companies (Non-MLM)

"Alternative Essential Oil Companies (Non-MLM)"

It might be helpful for some to be made aware of reputable Essential Oil companies beyond the well known DoTerra and Young Living. It's important to be aware that the claims made by many that their respective Essential Oils are the "best", "purest", or "highest quality" are simply untrue. But don't get me wrong! These MLM (Multi-Level Marketing) companies have very fine quality Essential Oils! And there is nothing wrong with making money having a business as an EO Rep! I have many friends who do this, and sell from both companies.

However, some of us out there would like to bypass these types of companies for whatever reason (i.e. hesitancy to sign-up with a company, affordability, etc.). If you're wanting to find a more affordable, yet high quality Essential Oil company, check out the list of recommendations below.

But first, here are a few things to keep in mind when assessing Essential Oil companies:
  • 1. There is no governing body that certifies Essential Oils.
  • 2. There are no "grades" of Essential Oils. There is no grade quality A, B, C, etc.
  • 3. "Therapeutic Grade", "Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade", "Pharmaceutical Grade", etc. are all Trademarked Phrases, or Marketing Phrases (See point #1). This means a company sets the standard themselves and deams themself whatever they please. This in and of itself isn't necessarily bad if you are only trying to communicate the purity of your EOs, however, don't fall into thinking there is an outside authority assessing this. Some companies are using these terms only to differentiate Aromatherapy Essential Oils from the Essential Oils used in fragrance, flavoring, or food only. This is a good thing, because Aromatherapy Essential Oils need to be pure and unadulterated, high quality Essential Oils.
  • 4. Ingestion: Some companies are obligated to NOT recommend their Essential Oils for Ingestion in order to protect themselves legally. EOs are extremely potent, and should not be used internally without the supervision of a Certified Aromatherapist. If a company isn't claiming that their EOs are "safe for Ingestion", that does NOT necessarily reflect upon the quality of their EOs. Also, the FDA's GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) regulation only applies to using Essential Oils as flavouring, i.e. 1 drop of Peppermint EO in an entire batch of Brownies. It has NOT been evaluated for internal use in any other capacity, including EOs in supplements, Lemon Oi in your water, EOs in capsules, etc. More Info:http://www.fda.gov/Food/IngredientsPackagingLabeling/GRAS &http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/USCODE-2010-title21/html/USCODE-2010-title21-chap9-subchapIV-sec348.htm
  • 5. Organic Labeling: Becoming Certified Organic is a lengthy and very expensive process. Many companies are able to accomplish this, despite being smaller in nature. Keep in mind that just because each EO a company has isn't Certified Organic, that doesn't necessarily mean they are garbage. So do your research!

Recommended Essential Oil Companies (in alphabetic order):
  • Aromatics International
http://www.aromaticsinternational.com

Essential Oils for Pregnancy & Childbirth

Essential Oils for Pregnancy & Childbirth

Education about the birth process, exploring birthing options, prenatal yoga, and creative imagery—casting off all preconceived ideas of a difficult or painful birth, hypnosis, etc. are all ways to invite the beauty of birth into the experience. THEN...adding such a WONDERFUL complementary modality such as Aromatherapy will be the icing on the cake." - Marge Clark, Aromatherapist

***Please educate yourself on the proper use of Essential Oils. They are potent and can be dangerous when used incorrectly, especially for Pregnant women. Always dilute with a Carrier Oil. Do not ingest Essential Oils except under the guidance of an experienced Certified Aromatherapist. Do not use Essential Oils on a Newborn baby under any circumstances. Essential Oils are very potent and not a good choice for Babies, and are quite often not the best choice for Pregnant women with a little one growing inside. Herbs are almost always a better, gentler choice for both Pregnancy, Labor, Postpartum, and for Newborns as well. As a disclaimer, PLEASE research each Herb and Essential Oil for any complications or risks in light of your health background and any medications you may be on and any complications in your Pregnancy. All of the information below is general advice only.

All that being said, below you will find reputable, safe, and conservative information on using Aromatherapy and Essential Oils to support the entire Childbirth process form Pregnancy to Postpartum. This is the culmination of extensive and ongoing research on my part as an Herbalist, drawing information from various Aromatherapists such as Jeanne Rose, Ashley Glassman, Marge Clark, a Midwife named Penny Lane, DNP, CNM, IBCLC who utilizes Essential Oils during Labor, and Lori Mitchell, RN and Clinical Aromatherapist.

Some Guidelines for using Essential Oils during Pregnancy & Childbirth:
  • Birthing Mothers are best left alone to their own natural laboring rhythm.
  • View Essential Oils as an Intervention.
  •  During Pregnancy, visualize how you plan to have Aromatherapy support your Birth. Experiment  a little in the last few weeks of your Pregnancy with using different safe Essential Oils to see which ones they are drawn to. For example, some have more of an affinity for Rose, Geranium, & Jasmine Essential Oils, whereas others are drawn more towards the Citrus Essential Oils. Find what is especially meaningful and soothing for the Pregnant Mother. These tendencies may indicate which Essential Oils will be most effective and beneficial during their Birth, if needed at all. The purpose of this is respecting the fact that a Patient-driven Birth has an ideal outcome, even Aromahtherapeutically.
  • Safety: Use common sense. Essential Oils have a long history of safe use, when used correctly. A couple specifics: In general it is wise to avoid using EOs during the first Trimester. Do not over do things, as it's easy to overdoes. They should not be put into the water a Mother is laboring in, since the Baby will encounter it immediately upon birth. Also avoid the facial area of both Mother and Baby.
  • When using Aromatherapy during Birth, try to keep it to 3 or less Essential Oils, since the Birthing Mother typically has a heightened perception, it will be better received to keep the Aromatherapy simpler.
  • Note that some Mothers prefer either Diffusion or a Topical massage. Sometimes touch can be too stimulating. So be discerning. Before Labor, ask what they have typically preferred in the past when they were sick and vulnerable, i.e. massages and cuddling, or no?
  • For Pain Management, it is a better mindset to uncover the cause of the pain, versus simply masking the pain. Don't just treat symptoms.
  • Check below for a list of Essential Oils to avoid while Pregnant, and check in the Comments section of this post for helpful Charts for reference.
"In my personal experience 90% of the time whole herbs, or other herbal preparations can be used far more safely and effectively for most situations during pregnancy than essential oils can.  Again, that is not to say there isn’t a place for them, but often when people find out how limited the amount of essential oils are that are safe for pregnancy, they feel their “natural” options for managing unwanted symptoms are gone too.  But this is not the case at all!  Symptoms such as heart burn, nausea, muscle aches, etc., can often be dealt with using herbal preparations that are far less concentrated and far safer for both mama and baby during pregnancy.  So don’t despair just because an essential oil is on the “no” list, you may be able to use the plant itself very effectively." - Ashley Glassman, Certified Clinical Master Aromatherapist

LABOR
  • Assisting Contractions
Clary Sage: The Adaptogenic (stabilizing and promoting of homeostasis) qualities of Clary Sage used in the correct dilution (typically very subtly) acts as a Uterine Tonic. It is effective at assisting the Uterus to do its job better, but not necessarily inducing or starting labour per se. If the Uterus is irritable or ineffective, it will help it become more effective and support contractions, without artificially strengthening the contractions like Pitocin. Apply to the inside of your ankles and abdomen to bring on stronger and more consistent contractions, especially when Labor has stalled.
Jasmine: Strengthens Contractions and dulls Uterine pain.
Myrrh: Speeds Labor and opens Cervix. Apply to the inside of your ankles and abdomen to support Labor and bring on stronger and more consistent contractions when Labor has stalled. This EO is controversial. Some Aromatherapists say not to use and others recommend it. Research and decide for yourself.

  • Calming
Grounding Blend/Calming Blend: Diffuse during Labor for a peaceful and calming effect, or rub on back of neck and wrists.
Chamomile: Very calming, and a gentle pain reliever.
Clary Sage: Relieves tension.
Lavender: Diffuse for calming, relaxation, and soothing during labor. Helps with maintaining gentle, serene atmosphere. Be wary of being too calm though, as it can drag labor out unnecessarily, and result in an overly exhausted birthing Mother. General guide for Lavender: "Less is More". Also great for stopping labor if labor has stalled, and encouraging a time or restfulness or even sleep if needed.
Neroli: Reduces fear, tension, insomnia, apprehension, nervousness, and anxiety. Beneficial for supporting calm, relaxed breathing (especially with small amounts of Frankincense). May be an especially good choice during Transition. One drop only on the pillow.
Rose: Has a very supportive effect emotionally during Labor. Can possibly be overpowering if too much is used though, so subtlety is key here! 1 drop of Rose goes a long way. It is very effective when using the Aromatherapy support of Rose to also visualize the Cervix opening as an actual Rose.

  • Energizing
Invigorating Blend/Citrus EOs: Diffuse or apply to wrists to support a tired laboring Mother. Also good for the Birth Team. It can keep everyone awake and focused.
Geranium: Very god for uplifting and assist in balancing emotional states.
Lemon: Diffuse as a mood elevation and support.

  • Labor Management
Grounding Blend: Apply to bottoms of feet throughout Labor.
Geranium Rose : Enhances circulation and is good for labor management techniques which focus on breathing.
Rose: Has a cleansing effect on the Uterus, acts as an antidepressant, and has a relaxing, softening effect on ligaments to assist in opening the Pelvis to push larger Babies (especially for smaller Mothers). Rose is a Uterine relaxant, which may seem counterproductive in Birth, but Rose is very Adaptogenic (stabilizing and promoting of homeostasis), so it can help the Uterus to work quite efficiently, yet still promote homeostasis between Contractions. Also, subtlety is the key here with using Rose: 1 Drop goes a long way.
Peppermint, Ginger, or a Digestive Blend: to support a nauseated Mother during Labor. Usually just inhaling the open bottle or putting a drop on a tissue to sniff is adequate.

  • Pain
***For Pain Management, it is a better mindset to uncover the cause of the pain, versus simply masking the pain. Don't just treat symptoms.
Black Pepper: Apply on lower back for supporting Back Labor.
Jasmine: Dulls Uterine pain and strengthens contractions.

Attachment Parenting Info

"Attachment Parenting Info"

Attachment Parenting International's Eight Principles of Parenting:
  • 1) Prepare for Pregnancy, Birth, and Parenting: Become emotionally and physically prepared for pregnancy and birth. Research available options for healthcare providers and birthing environments, and become informed about routine newborn care. Continuously educate yourself about developmental stages of childhood, setting realistic expectations and remaining flexible.
  • 2) Feed with Love and Respect: Breastfeeding is the optimal way to satisfy an infant's nutritional and emotional needs. "Bottle Nursing" adapts breastfeeding behaviors to bottle-feeding to help initiate a secure attachment. Follow the feeding cues for both infants and children, encouraging them to eat when they are hungry and stop when they are full. Offer healthy food choices and model healthy eating behavior.
  • 3) Respond with Sensitivity: Build the foundation of trust and empathy beginning in infancy. Tune in to what your child is communicating to you, then respond consistently and appropriately. Babies cannot be expected to self-soothe, they need calm, loving, empathetic parents to help them learn to regulate their emotions. Respond sensitively to a child who is hurting or expressing strong emotion, and share in their joy.
  • 4) Use Nurturing Touch: Touch meets a baby's needs for physical contact, affection, security, stimulation, and movement. Skin-to-skin contact is especially effective, such as during breastfeeding, bathing, or massage. Carrying or Babywearing also meets this need while on the go. Hugs, snuggling, back rubs, massage, and physical play help meet this need in older children.
  • 5) Ensure Safe Sleep, Physically and Emotionally: Babies and children have needs at night just as they do during the day; from hunger, loneliness, and fear, to feeling too hot or too cold. They rely on parents to soothe them and help them regulate their intense emotions. Sleep training techniques can have detrimental physiological and psychological effects. Safe co-sleeping has benefits to both babies and parents.
  • 6) Provide Consistent and Loving Care: Babies and young children have an intense need for the physical presence of a consistent, loving, responsive caregiver: ideally a parent. If it becomes necessary, choose an alternate caregiver who has formed a bond with the child and who cares for him in a way that strengthens the attachment relationship. Keep schedules flexible, and minimize stress and fear during short separations
  • 7) Practice Positive Discipline: Positive discipline helps a child develop a conscience guided by his own internal discipline and compassion for others. Discipline that is empathetic, loving, and respectful strengthens the connection between parent and child. Rather than reacting to behavior, discover the needs leading to the behavior. Communicate and craft solutions together while keeping everyone's dignity intact.
  • 8) Strive for Balance in Your Personal and Family Life: It is easier to be emotionally responsive when you feel in balance. Create a support network, set realistic goals, put people before things, and don't be afraid to say "no". Recognize individual needs within the family and meet them to the greatest extent possible without compromising your physical and emotional health. Be creative, have fun with parenting, and take time to care for yourself.

Dr. William Sears' 7 Attachment Parenting Tools:

The Baby B’s Dr. William Sears first wrote on Attachment Parenting as an approach to parenting, but not a strict set of rules to follow. He lists out the "Seven Baby B's" of Attachment Parenting as tools to use in your responsive parenting.
  • 1) Birth bonding: The way baby and parents get started with one another helps the early attachment unfold. The days and weeks after birth are a sensitive period in which mothers and babies are uniquely primed to want to be close to one another. A close attachment after birth and beyond allows the natural, biological attachment-promoting behaviors of the infant and the intuitive, biological, care-giving qualities of the mother to come together. Both members of this biological pair get off to the right start at a time when the infant is most needy and the mother is most ready to nurture. “What if something happens to prevent our immediate bonding?” Sometimes medical complications keep you and your baby apart for a while, but then catch-up bonding is what happens, attachment-parenting-babies starting as soon as possible. When the concept of bonding was first delivered onto the parenting scene twenty years ago, some people got it out of balance. The concept of human bonding being an absolute “critical period” or a “now-or-never” relationship was never intended. Birth bonding is not like instant glue that cements the mother-child relationship together forever. Bonding is a series of steps in your lifelong growing together with your child. Immediate bonding simply gives the relationship between parents and attachment parenting babies a headstart.
  • 2) Breastfeeding: Breastfeeding is an exercise in baby reading. Breastfeeding helps you read your baby’s cues, her body language, which is the first step in getting to know your baby. Breastfeeding gives baby and mother a smart start in life. Breastmilk contains unique brain-building nutrients that cannot be manufactured or bought. Breastfeeding promotes the right chemistry between mother and baby by stimulating your body to produce prolactin and oxytocin, hormones that give your mothering a boost.
  • 3) Babywearing: A baby learns a lot in the arms of a busy caregiver. Carried babies fuss less and spend more time in the state of quiet alertness, the behavior state in which babies learn most about their environment. Babywearing improves the sensitivity of the parents because your baby is so close to you, you get to know baby better. Closeness promotes familiarity with Attachment Parenting babies.
  • 4) Bedding Close to Baby: Wherever all family members get the best night’s sleep is the right arrangement for your individual family. Co-sleeping adds a nighttime touch that helps busy daytime parents reconnect with their infant at night. Since nighttime is a scary time for little people, sleeping within close touching and nursing distance minimizes nighttime separation anxiety and helps Attachment Parenting babies learn that sleep is a pleasant state to enter and a fearless state to remain in.
  • 5) Belief in the Language Value of Your Baby’s Cry: A baby’s cry is a signal designed for the survival of the baby and the development of the parents. Responding sensitively to your baby’s cries builds trust. Babies trust that their caregivers will be responsive to their needs. Parents gradually learn to trust in their ability to appropriately meet their baby’s needs. This raises the parent-child communication level up a notch. Tiny Attachment Parenting babies cry to communicate, not to manipulate.
  • 6) Beware of Baby Trainers: Attachment Parenting teaches you how to be discerning of advice, especially those rigid and extreme parenting styles that teach you to watch a clock or a schedule instead of your baby; you know, the cry-it-out crowd. This “convenience” parenting is a short-term gain, but a long-term loss, and is not a wise investment. These more restrained styles of parenting create a distance between you and your baby and keep you from becoming an expert in your child.
  • 7) Balance: In your zeal to give so much to your baby, it’s easy to neglect the needs of yourself and your marriage. As you will learn the key to putting balance in your parenting is being appropriately responsive to your baby – knowing when to say “yes” and when to say “no,” and having the wisdom to say “yes” to yourself when you need help.

The Four Corners of Gentle Parenting: Empathy, Respect, Understanding, & Boundaries
  • Empathy: Parenting with your child’s feelings in mind as much as possible. Using empathy to gain insight into your child’s behaviour and to decide what action you should take in response. The key here really is thinking “Would I like it if somebody did this to me?” if the answer is “No”, then why would you do it to your child?
  • Respect: Respecting your child as much as you would respect an adult. Respecting their likes and dislikes, their individual differences and their opinions and thoughts. Children are real people – just like us. If we want them to respect us, then we need to respect them.
  • Understanding: Aiming to understand our children’s behaviour and communication. Importantly understanding what is normal for the child at any given age, physiologically and psychologically speaking and resetting your parenting expectations based upon these norms. Gentle Parenting is also about understanding others and not being judgemental of their parenting choices, even if they differ from your own.
  • Boundaries: Gentle Parenting is not permissive parenting. Children do not always ‘get their own way’, parents do not say 'Yes’ all of the time. In fact often they can be more strict, with more boundaries in place than others. There is no point in having boundaries however if you do not consistently enforce them. These limits give children a sense of security and they are vital.

There are no rules to follow, no ‘how to’ lists and no exclusions. It doesn’t matter if you bottle feed, give birth by elective C-Section, use a buggy and your child sleeps in a cot in their own room. Just as it doesn’t make you a ‘gentle parent’ if you breastfeed until 3 years, homebirth, babywear and bedshare. These ‘tools’ are irrelevant, they don’t define the conscious actions and thoughts behind your parenting. Your age, gender, social class, education level, hobbies, green credentials and how you chose to keep your child healthy (vaccinate or not, conventional medicine or complementary) are also irrelevant, they too do not define the thoughts behind your actions. It is not about how you wean your baby, or what type of education you chose. It is not new, it is not trendy. Gentle parents come from all walks of life, all ages, all ethnicities and most don’t even realise that their style of parenting would fall under this banner, it’s just the way they have always been. Gentle Parenting is a way of being, it is a mindset, not a label or a rule book.

Positive Discipline

These Parenting styles incorporate the "golden rule" of parenting; parents should treat their children the way they would want to be treated. Positive discipline is an overarching philosophy that helps a child develop a conscience guided by his own internal discipline and compassion for others. Positive discipline is rooted in a secure, trusting, connected relationship between parent and child. Discipline that is empathetic, loving and respectful strengthens that the connection between parent and child, while harsh or overly-punitive discipline weakens the connection. Remember that the ultimate goal of discipline is to help children develop self-control and self-discipline.

The Dangers of Traditional Discipline
  • Instilling fear in children serves no purpose and creates feelings of shame and humiliation. Fear has been shown to lead to an increased risk of future antisocial behavior including crime and substance abuse.
  • Studies show that spanking and other physical discipline techniques can create ongoing behavioral and emotional problems.
  • Harsh, physical discipline teaches children that violence is the only way to solve problems.
  • Controlling or manipulative discipline compromises the trust between parent and child, and harms the attachment bond.
  • It is a sign of strength and personal growth for a parent to examine his or her own childhood experiences and how they may negatively impact their parenting, and to seek help if they are unable to practice positive discipline.
A Gentler Approach to Discipline
  • Positive discipline begins at birth. The bonds of attachment and trust that are formed when parents consistently and compassionately respond to an infant's needs become the foundation of discipline.
  • Positive Discipline involves using such techniques as prevention, distraction, and substitution to gently guide children away from harm.
  • Help your child explore safely, seeing the world through his eyes and empathizing as he experiences the natural consequences of his actions.
  • Try to understand what need a child's behavior is communicating. Children often communicate their feelings through their behavior.
  • Resolve problems together in a way that leaves everyone's dignity intact.Understand developmentally appropriate behavior, and tailor loving guidance to the needs and temperaments of your child.
  • Children learn by example so it's important to strive to model positive actions and relationships within a family and in interactions with others.
  • When parents react in a way that creates tension, anger or hurt feelings, they can repair any damage to the parent-child relationship by taking time to reconnect and apologize later.

Getting Labor Started/More Productive Contractions:
***Remember: It's best to wait until baby is ready to come and to work with your body and not force labor prematurely. Due Dates are an estimate only. It is recommended to not attempt any means of inducing labor until 40 or 41 Weeks, natural methods included.
  • Prenatal Massage
  • Rest and Nap as much as possible. Being well rested and relaxed is important for letting labor begin.
  • Have a make out session with your significant other and/or have sex (as long as your water hasn't broken yet).
  • Go for long walks and stay active.
  • Walk up and down stairs. To get your body doing deep lunges, take them 2 at a time for 15 minutes at a time, then rest and repeat. This might help move baby further down.Chiropractic Care (only a Chiropractor who is skilled at working with Pregnant women).
  • Acupuncture
  • Pray/Meditate
  • Do the exercises on spinningbabies.com website. If Baby is not positioned properly for birth, it can hold things up. So work on getting Baby into an optimal position so labor can begin.
  • Nipple stimulation with a Breast Pump: 2 min on, 3 min off, and repeat for 2 hours to get steady Oxytocin flowing.
  • Make Parsley Tea. Steep fresh Parsley in hot water for a few minutes, strain, then drink.
  • Apply Clary Sage & Myrrh Essential Oils to the inside of your ankles and abdomen for labor/contraction support. Please educate yourself on the proper use of Essential Oils. They are potent and can be dangerous when used incorrectly. Always dilute with a Carrier Oil.
  • Last resort: Take Castor Oil, but it can really “clean you out” and make delivery messy for some women.
  • Last resort: Have Midwife or Dr strip membranes, and then go for a walk right afterwards.

Support & Pain Management During Labor:
  • Hire a Doula! A Birth Advocate can make all the difference in achieving the birth you want. Many regret never hiring one, but it's rarely heard that anyone actually regretted having one there.
  • Only have people in the delivery room who are supportive of Natural Birth, INCLUDING your OB or Midwife. If you desire a Natural Birth and they are not supportive, then switch to a different Practitioner, no matter how late in the game you are. It will be worth it.
  • Embrace each Contraction, knowing what they are trying to accomplish, so they are more productive.
  • Use a Birthing Ball.
  • Get in Water, i.e. the shower, or tub, or consider a waterbirth.
  • Squat. Squatting uses gravity to help Baby move down, intensifies the urge to push, and can increase Pelvic Outlet by up to 15%.
  • Use a Rebozo during Labor.
  • Acupressure: http://www.mamanatural.com/how-to-do-acupressure-when-youre-in-labor

  • Breathe Deeply
  • Use Heat. DIY Heating Pad: http://www.budgetsavvydiva.com/2012/12/diy-heating-pack-sew/
  • Turn off the Lights: Melatonin synergizes with Oxytocin to enhance labor contractions.
  • Eat a Honey stick/spoonful of honey for a boost of energy if needed during labor.
  • Eat
  • Stay Hydrated
  • Drink Coconut Water to restore Electrolytes naturally. Or DIY  labor-aid:http://www.mommypotamus.com/how-to-make-a-labor-aid-electrolyte-drink/
